First Impression Out Of The Box:

Packaging on the Hellvape Dead Rabbit is very nice. It comes in a green box with a Dead Rabbit logo on the front. Definitely a little different. It’s a single tier box and as soon as you open it up, you will see the RDA, a 510 drip tip adapter, a short chuff style black drip tip, and pre-installed is a beautiful resin drip tip. There was also a spare parts pack with two Allen keys and some o’rings. Overall, the initial impression is the quality of the tank looks really nice. I’m going to build this thing up and wick it, let’s see how it performs.

What’s In The Box:

  • One 10mm Wide Bore 810 Delrin Drip Tip

Hellvape Dead Rabbit Review

From Top To Bottom:

This RDA is a collaboration between Vaping Heathen, a popular YouTube reviewer and Hellvape. Hellvape does have a history of making some pretty good atomizers and Heathen is definitely a popular YouTube reviewer so they should make a good team when it comes to building a quality RDA. I have to be honest, I do watch Heathens Channel but most of the times I do it because he’s always one of the first guys to show the new stuff first. So, if he has something that I don’t have that I want to take a look at, I definitely watch his channel. There is one thing that kinda bothered me about the way he went about promoting it and I am going to bring it up here. I watched a couple of his videos where he showcased the Dead Rabbit and he kept saying that you can say whatever you want about the atomizer but you can’t say that it has bad flavor. I really got a problem with him putting a pre-qualification on the RDA he created before anybody else has reviewed it. I mean, having great flavor is half the battle of having a great RDA. I just think he should have left that part out of his videos and let the RDA stand on its own merits. It’s almost like he was saying that if you don’t think this RDA has good flavor then you just don’t know what you’re talking about. Billy, if you do read this, in the future when you come out with another atomizer, just do us all a favor and don’t prequalify it. Let the RDA speak for itself. If it’s a good RDA, people will recognize that. I just think that is a much better way to go about it and it will not seem like you are putting peer pressure on other reviewers to say the flavor is good. Nonetheless, it will get an honest vape review here.

Hellvape Dead Rabbit Review

As usual, we will start off at the top and the best place to start off with the Hellvape Dead Rabbit is with the drip tips. I absolutely love the red and black resin drip tip that came included with my RDA. It is thick, and tall enough so that you don’t get a lot of heat even while chain vaping. It’s just a very comfortable drip tip and probably my favorite out of the three options. The next drip tip is a black, short, and wide chuff style tip. It’s a little too short for my liking and you will definitely feel the heat from the atomizer when you chain vape with this one. The third option you have is a 510 drip tip adapter. I am kind of torn between this setup and the one that comes pre installed with the Dead Rabbit. The reason I say that is because if you use the 510 drip tip adapter and you install a narrow, taller type of 510 drip tip, it definitely intensifies the flavor. If you have the right drip tip to use with this drip tip adapter, you can see a noticeable difference in flavor. It’s really hard to figure out which one I like better, the pre-installed drip tip or running my own 510 drip tip with the adapter. The one thing I do like is the fact that Heathen gave us some options when it comes to drip tips. I give a lot of credit to him and Hellvape for doing that and noticing that that’s the where the market is moving. Nice job guys.

Next, we have the top cap of the Dead Rabbit. It accepts Goon style drip tips and so far, all of my aftermarket Goon drip tips have fit nice and snug. There is some knurling around the edge of the top cap and they really did a good job machining that part. The top cap has three airflow slots so you can run this RDA in single coil mode. The machining on the airflow slots is really well done and they are slotted downward to maximize flavor. My one issue with the top cap is it is extremely tight. I thought it would loosen up over time but I literally have to take the barrel off to adjust my air flow because the O-ring and the tolerance are just too tight. When I go to adjust the AFC with the barrel installed, the barrel moves but the top cap does not. I would have liked to have seen this a little looser. The interior of the top cap does have an extremely conical design and that is always good when it comes to building an atomizer for flavor.

Hellvape Dead Rabbit Review

The barrel has some Dead Rabbit branding on it that looks to be engraved. The branding is very subtle and it is not intrusive at all. The two airflow slots on the barrel are well-machined and they are cyclops style. Overall, the machining of the barrel is very nicely done. The barrel does sit on the base and mine is kind of loose. I wish that I had the same tolerance on the barrel that the top cap has. Basically, in my opinion, I think if they should have reversed the tolerances between the barrel and the top cap, it would have went a long way in making this a great RDA. The top cap has the tolerance the barrel should have and vice versa.

The base of the RDA has two o’rings and like I said above, they do hold the barrel onto the base but it is a little on the loose side. On the bottom of the base, there is some Hellvape and Heathen branding as well as some serial numbers. The 510 pin is removable and you do have the option of running this RDA as a squonker. The threading on the exterior of the 510 is very smooth and so far, the Dead Rabbit has sat flush on every mod I have put it on. There is also an insulator ring around the 510 pin and the pin itself is gold plated.

Hellvape Dead Rabbit Review

Overall, I have to say that the machining on the Dead Rabbit is very impressive. The tolerances on the o’rings on every part of the Dead Rabbit could have used some tweaking but it’s not too bad. When it comes to the little things like that, I do expect more from an RDA that has a YouTube reviewer’s name on it.

The Deck:

I have to give Hellvape and Heathen a lot of credit as they did come up with an innovative deck. It is a 4-post design with a single terminal per post. The terminals are 2.5 mm wide and you can get some really decent size coils in there. The innovative thing about this deck is that the leads of your coils are loaded from the top of the post. It’s almost like a floating postless deck for lack of a better term. The screws are flat head and side mounted. I would have preferred allen head grub screws. They did provide them as spares though and one of the first things I did was swap them out. The positive post on the Dead Rabbit is gold plated. Overall, a very innovative design that I have not really seen before. In fact, when you look at the post without any coils installed, they kind of look like rabbit ears from the side, hence the name Dead Rabbit.

Building And Wicking:

Building the Dead Rabbit is very similar to building a postless deck atomizer with one little important caveat. Since I referred to this deck as kind of a floating postless deck, you will be able to cut any excess leads that you have from the bottom of the terminal. What I mean is, you do still need to pre cut your leads just like you would on a postless deck but you don’t have to be as exact as you do with a postless deck. The reason for that is your leads will come out the bottom of the terminal and if you see anything sticking out, you can get your wire cutters in there and cut off the excess. It does take a little maneuvering to get your wire cutters in there but it can be done. I think that’s an important feature that a lot of people will definitely enjoy. It definitely makes it easier to build on as opposed to a traditional post less deck.

Once you mount your coils, you kind of have to place them as close as you can to the actual deck screws. This will ensure that you leave enough room for both coils and their cotton wicks. Because of the raised deck of the Dead Rabbit, it does make you use extra long wicks. Definitely longer which than you would in a traditional RDA. The wick length is almost the same as you would use for a typical RDTA. I thought when I first saw this design that it would be kind of an issue because of the length that the juice had to travel up through the wicks. I have to say that so far, it has not been an issue at all and the Dead Rabbit does actually wick pretty well even while chain vaping. I have had no issues with it keeping up at all.

The juice well is 5 mm deep but when you look at it in person, it really does not look to be that deep. The Dead Rabbit will hold a lot of juice in the juice well while the top cap is on because the top airflow is so high. So, technically, you can go over the edge of the base with juice as long as the top cap is on. In that situation though, pull the top cap off and you will have juice all over the place. So it’s kind of a trade off and it does work well because the airflow slots are so high that it is very hard to over drip on the Dead Rabbit. Use it as a squonker and it is very hard to over squonk on the Dead Rabbit as well.

How Does It Vape?

I think the Dead Rabbit is a decent solid vape. The flavor is not OMG but at the same time, it is not bad either. It is very upper, middle of the road flavor as far as I am concerned. Clouds on the Dead Rabbit are definitely there and you can cloud up a room rather quickly with this atomizer. I do think that the Dead Rabbit does perform much better as a squonker than it does as a non-squonker. I have been running it on my Geekvape G Box squonker and I have to say that it does pair very well with that box as a squonker. However, as a squonker, it almost suffers the same faith as the Pulse 24 by Vandy Vape. As squonkers, both atomizers are a little ahead of their time and you really do need a dual-battery squonker to get the full potential out of these types of atomizers. That’s not Billy or Hellvape’s fault, it’s just that the squonking market has not caught up to some of the atomizers that are currently available. Overall, I’d have to say that the vape quality is good. The flavor on the Dead Rabbit is good and so are the clouds.

I have tried multiple builds on the Dead Rabbit and I have to say that no matter what type of coils I put in this atomizer, the flavor and clouds are good. It is not great or the next great flavor atomizer. It’s just kind of very middle of the road. Right now, I have dual Clapton’s in there ohming out at .18 at 80 Watts on my brand new Voopoo Resin Drag. I have the air flow shut down to about halfway and the flavor is very serviceable but it is definitely not the most bangin’ flavor I’ve ever gotten from an RDA. Air flow on it is very loose when you run it wide open and I do prefer closing it down a little more than half way so I can get the flavor to intensify a bit. I also use the 510 drip tip adapter with a narrower 510 drip tip to intensify the flavor a bit when I run it closed down. It definitely helps the flavor to run it that way. I do vape a lot of fruity vapes and bakeries. I definitely think the Dead Rabbit fares better with the fruity types of vapes rather than the bakery types. I just found the flavor popped a little better when I used the fruity types of juices.

What Would Have Made It Better:

  • Looser tolerance on the AFC
  • Tighter tolerance on the base
  • Lowering the airflow slots so the airflow comes from underneath the coil.
  • Raise the edge of the base to make the juice well just a little deeper

Conclusion:

My overall feel about the Dead Rabbit is that it’s an okay RDA. It does not have OMG, banging, flavor but the flavor is pretty decent. The airflow is very smooth and when you do cut it down, the flavor will definitely intensify but not to the point that it would rank the Dead Rabbit as a true flavor RDA. This RDA is for the vaper that may be a sloppy dripper or the vaper that likes to squonk. For some reason, it definitely does perform better as a squonking RDA. I think that maybe because of the long wicks that are required. When your squonking, it’s much easier to keep them saturated. I know that I definitely do enjoy the Dead Rabbit better on my Geekvape G Box than I do on any other mod that I own. If that’s the type of RDA that you’re in the market for, then the Dead Rabbit is definitely worth a look. It is nicely machined and well-built but the flavor that this RDA produces, unfortunately, is just ordinary and really nothing special. Because of Heathen’s status as a vape reviewer, I guess I expected it to be a better flavor RDA. Unfortunately, in my opinion, it does just not live up to the hype I have seen other reviewers giving it.

First off let me thank you for your brutally honest review, I respect that a lot. I do have to defend myself here though. When I discussed the flavor before it was released I was just giving my honest opinion as a vaper. I’ve tried every rda on the market and when I got the first prototype of the rabbit, it was the best flavor that I’ve had in an rda and I think it is because of how smooth the airflow is(which I’m sure you would agree) so when I said that it had great flavor, i meant it, wether it was my rda or anyone else’s rda, it has great flavor. Now at this point I have watched and read hundreds of reviews and I have to say that this is the first review that I’ve seen or read that has called the flavor just “okay.” I believe you are being 100% honest and I really respect that but I’m just stating that I’ve seen a few not so great reviews and they all stated that the one saving grace was the outstanding flavor. For me at this point I do believe that my initial statements about the flavor before the release has been totally justified judging from the massive amount of feedback. After reading this well thought out and honest review however I can state that instead of being 100% justified I am now 99% justified in my pre-release remarks. Lmao. I seriously do thank you for your review and I do want more reviews like this. If there is problems in something that I designed I’d like to know what it is so that I may learn from it and maybe correct it in the future. A review such as this is much more satisfying than someone blowing smoke up my A**. Thank you. Slainte’.

      Hey Billy,

First of all, I want to thank you for taking the time to read my review. I also want to say that I appreciate your kind words. I do put a lot of hard work into my reviews and I take pride in the fact that most people see my reviews as brutally honest, because that is exactly what they are meant to be. I myself watch a lot of reviews, but only after I have done my own review just to see what other people are saying about a certain product. I do agree with you that a lot of reviews did say this RDA has great flavor. Unfortunately, my opinion is just a little different. While I said numerous times in the review that the flavor is good. I just don’t think it lives up to the hype that most mainstream YouTube reviews gave it. I don’t know if the hype is a product of personal relationships or if they genuinely think it has great flavor. To be honest, that really is no concern of mine. The only thing that I can do is review what the companies put in front of me, as honestly as I possibly can. That’s what I did with your RDA and that’s what I do with every piece of product that is sent to me. I don’t know if you noticed, but this isn’t my first rodeo. I have been doing written reviews for almost two years now and I have 20 pages of reviews on this site alone.

I do agree with you when you say that the airflow is super smooth. In fact I actually said that in my review. I still stand by my comment that I think it was a little unprofessional of you to go on YouTube and brag about the flavor before anyone even had it in their hands. To be honest, I wouldn’t have even had a problem with that if the RDA was available at the time that you made your statement. To make your statement before the RDA even hit the market is an attempt to stack the deck in your favor. At least, that’s the way I interpreted it. I have seen many other reviewers develop their own atomizers and they refuse to actually review their own product. What most of them do is they’ll give a first look and say they hope that their peers review it honestly. That’s what I and a lot of other people were expecting you to do. To come out and pre qualify your product as having great flavor, before anybody even has a chance to try it, is just disingenuous at best. I just think it’s a bad practice and I felt like I had to point it out in my review. It’s nothing personal, it just rubbed me the wrong way and I felt like I had to make a note of it in the review. I do have to give you tons of credit though. If that was indeed your intention, it seems like it may have actually worked.

Again, as I stated in my review I think the Dead Rabbit is a middle of the road flavor RDA. I also think it’s an excellent squonking RDA. Hopefully, you didn’t take any of this too personally. I am a sub of your channel and I appreciate the the hard work as well as the effort that actually goes into your channel and the development of an RDA. If I ever do see you at of a vape event, I’ll introduce myself and maybe we can even have a beer. Vape on brother and remeber my opinion is just that, my opinion.

I had the same issue with the O-ring tension on my wife’s dead rabbit. The baggie of spares contains O-rings of different thicknesses and I found after swapping them out on my wife’s that the O ring tension was perfect. I hope this helps you.

I think the dead rabbit is state of the art in flavor. There could be a few issues with o-rigs smoother. But not all things are perfect tweak it a little here and there a waala!!! Good job heathen. And for your review sounds like your just speaking your mind please don’t hate. There’s way to much of that going on in this world. Just lay back and enjoy what vapes good for you!!! To each is his own.

I’m sorry guys. “Great” just does not apply to the flavor from this atomizer as it comes out of box. Maybe with a smaller drip tip, there would be an improvement, but as for out of the box, it;s “meh” at best. Also needs more airflow to cool those coils. It is also “meh” for clouds as well. I do like the build deck design, but it kind of comes off as a rip off of Ijoys RDTA combo without the tank. This atomizer has been claimed to be its own tank, filling from the drip tip, however when filled that way it spits badly, A fix would be make the airflow larger and include a smaller bore drip tip.
