Let’s get into it. Let’s get into our original question. How does thing thing stock up against past Twisted Messes RDA? Is it a legitimate cloud chucker? Yeah, you saw it. This is a legit cloud chucker, man. This thing can put out, there’s no doubt about it. I get really nice flavor and the clouds on this one are plentiful. If you’re into rebuildable dripping atomizers (RDAs) that can produce massive clouds, if you’re into busting huge weather systems out, definitely check this one out.
What’s up, Insiders?
Today, we’re going to be going over another collaboration. We’re talking about the Augvape Twisted Messes. We’re talking about the Occula RDA. Now, if you know anything about vaping, or if you’ve been vaping for any time, you know that Twisted Messes is known for producing cloud chucking RDAs. The big question is, how does this one stock up against some of their other RDAs from the past? Is it a legitimate cloud chucker? Make sure you watch the whole review, find out exactly what I think.
From Top to Bottom
This is your top cap.
Check out those egg-shaped airflow holes. Those are kind of neat. Look at that. Look at that weird shape on them. I’ve never seen that before. I kind of like the placement. I kind of like the shape. Drip tip is a little too low profile for me. They put a little bit of metal in it like that. I’m not sure I’m crazy about that. Look how thin that is. How the hell do you actually vape on that without getting bacon lips? Kind of ridiculous, man. And there’s only one drip tip. I don’t know what Twisted Messes and Augvape were thinking. ‘Yeah, let’s make it look better. Let’s not worry about how the comfort is on it.’
Check out the cuts.
The way they did the cuts. On the top cap here, you can see, they made one side longer so you can run this in single coil mode. I don’t know. I’m just not a big fan of single coil on a dual coil addie. There’s so many great single coil RDAs out there. Why even bother. But let me show you what I’m talking about. There it is. Both sides closed. Now, if you open up one side, that side still stays closed. You can reverse it and run the coil on the other side if you want to, it’s up to you. Or you can just open them both up, just like that. No big deal.
Machining on this, I don’t know, it’s kind of on the thin side. This is a little pointy. I wish they would have smoothed that out a little bit but it’s nothing great. It’s nothing earth shattering. I do like the knurling on top here so you can get a grip. I do like the subtle branding, the little Occula emblem over there. That’s not bad. Overall, decent.
Here’s the main part that everybody’s interested in, the deck. Look at those huge, huge post holes. Just phenomenally big, nice job on that. I like these big metal blocks that raise up when you raise the screw. Awesome job on that. O-ring tolerance on here is nice. You can see, I do not have the squonking pin installed. I got the regular pin installed. Decent juice well. They kind of put like a little Occula branding on the bottom there. Juice well is a nice size, nothing wrong with that. Big, big post screws. I wouldn’t even recommend trying to use philips head with this because you’re going to need a huge philips head. Just use a regular flat head with it and you’ll be fine. That’s what I’ve been doing when I build it. You can see how big those post holes open up. You can just put some massive coils in there.
The one thing I hate about decks like this, though, is I do have to share lead space. And even though it’s huge in there, I like having separate spaces for my leads. I’m not a fan of sharing lead spaces. You see that little notch like there, that’s going to give you a locking barrel system. Overall, decent job on the deck. Looks like it’s going to be easy to build on.
On the bottom, you can see, it’s serialized. Augvape, Twisted Messes, gold-plated 510 pin. Like I said, that’s the traditional pin. Even though it looks like a squonker, it’s not. Insulator ring around that, stainless steel threading around that. There is your flathead negative post screw and there’s some Occula branding as well.
Let’s drop a build in this thing and see how she performs. Like I showed you before, nice wide post holes. We’re going to put some nice coils in there. I got some tri core claptons in there. Let’s try them out, see what they look like. The first thing you want to do is you want to get your coil right there. Kind of situated right where you want to. I like to put it right up against the well there and we can push it back a little bit if we need to, but that’s the way I like to do it when I’m first initially placing the coils. I put them in there and I kind of just situate them right where I want them like that. Giving it myself a little bit of space so my barrel doesn’t touch it and short. You kind of want to put your fingers on there and you want to hold that in place. And then what you do is you take your screwdriver and you just start tightening it down, get it nice and tight, and that’s it. You’re all built.
Now we got to go after our leads. What I like to do is I like to go for the easy ones first, kind of bend them a little bit out of the way. Then we get our flush cutters, we’re getting it in there as close as we can, put our finger over it, and snip, and get it out of the way. Same thing on the other side. We’re going to go after the leads that’s easy. See how it’s in there? Get our flush cutter in there. We separate that lead a little bit. We get our flush cutter in there, just give it a nice snip and that’s what it should look like. Now, what we’re going to do is we’re going to pull those coils out of the way to get to the other two leads. You just get your coiling jig in there, kind of pop them over and out of the way. Same thing on the other side, get it in there. Pop it out of the way as much as you can and now we’re going to get in there just like that. See that? Boom! Knock it right off. Same thing on this side, make sure you get it in there. Make sure you don’t cut the lead next to it because then you got to rebuild it again. Just get it in there, boom!
Now we’re all built. We just got to worry about coil placement. Now how you want to ride these coils is you kind of want to ride them a little high because that airflow was actually a little high. You want them up a little bit like that, in order to get the best flavor. Same thing on the other side, you want to pull them up a little bit. Pull them up and out, just a little bit, just like that. And your coil should look something like that. That’s around the perfect tight. Let me show you what I’m talking about. See that, man? Now, when you pop that barrel on with that coil placement, that airflow is doing a full frontal assault on that coil. And that’s the way you want it for the best flavor.
Coils all situated correctly. What you want to do is you want to burn them in. right now, we’re ohming out at 0.36. We’ll give it a quick dry fire. Make sure we have no hot spots. You can see that resistance is changing, that’s a good thing. Plenty of hot spots, want to get them out. Give it another pulse, and there we go. We’re glowing evenly from the inside out. And we’re ohming out at 0.2 ohms which is just fine.
If you’re looking for a super beginner friendly RDA to build on then the Newgen Quark RDA is perfect for you and is amazing value.
Now you want to take a nice strip of cotton here. You want to get it pointy at one end and you just want to send it all through, just like that. You got some nice tension there, that’s what you want. Now we’re going to take the fat end, and we’re going to cut it right at the bottom of the base, right there. Now we’re going to make a point on the other end and we’re going to do the same thing. We’re going to send it right on through. Now we’re going to do the same thing on the other end. Going to send that cotton through, and you can see, we got some nice resistance there. That’s how we want it, just like that. We’re going to do the same thing when we cut. We’re going to cut it right at the bottom of the base, like that. Maybe pull this on through a little bit. It might be a little on the short side. And then we’re going to use it as a guide and we’ll just cut it right there. Now, we just do the quick tuck and roll. Tuck, and roll it over. Same thing on this side, same thing over here. We’re going to take our vape shear, right there, like that. That’s exactly how your atomizer should look.
Juice we’re going to be using today is Vapetasia’s Blueberry Killer Kustard. You like blueberries, you like their custard, their regular vanilla custard, go check this one out. It’s really nice. Now what you want to do, maybe get a few drops of juice down the middle like that. Fill up that juice well a little bit and then just start painting that coil and get that cotton nice and saturated. That’s what you want to do. Just get that cotton soaked up nice. Same thing on the other side. Put a couple of drops in that juice well and just get that cotton working. Same thing on the other side, just get that cotton nice and juicy. Lay that juice on there. Now what we do, we give it a quick fire, make sure we got vape. There we go, we have vape. Man, this stuff smells good.
Now we take our top cap, we pop it on right there. Make sure it locks down. There we go. Now we’re all ready to vape with a juicy coil and wicks.
One thing I didn’t show you about the airflow was while this does have a locking barrel system, it does have some play in it so you can make sure when you’re adjusting the airflow, if you cut like one side off, you can still move the barrel and center that in front of the coil. That’s a neat feature. I do like that, I wanted to point that out. See, now, I’m all the way. I got two cut off, now I can move the barrel and make sure that coil is hitting the center of the barrel. See? Now if I want to center it again, and use all three, I can center it again. I like that. You can put those 3 airflow holes wherever you want on the coil. That’s definitely a nice feature.
What’s in the Box
- 1 OCCULA 24mm RDA
- 1 Hex Key
- 1 Screwdriver
- 1 Gold-Plated BF Squonk Pin
- 1 Pack of O-Rings
- 1 User Manual
You get an allen key, you get some spare o-rings, and you get a squonking pin. There are no spare deck screws. I don’t like that.
Alright, Insiders! Let’s get in to the cons and pros.
First con is going to be, you guys know I hate them. I hate shorty drip tips and this thing is way too short. I don’t like it, it’s a con.
And because of that short drip tip, if you’re running a hot build in this thing and you’re cranking up the wattage in it, you can get some bacon lips.
While I love the deck, I don’t like sharing lead space. I don’t like putting two leads into one terminal. It’s just a pet peeve of mine. I got to chalk up a con to that.
Last con is going to be, it’s only available in two colors.
That’s it on the cons. Nothing that really affects the flavor or the cloud production on this. If you are looking for an RDA with great flavor be sure to check out the kaees alexander review I did. It’s a flavor banger for sure. Let’s move on to the pros.
First pro is going to be, it’s aesthetically pleasing. Look at it on my Double Barrel V3. It’s short, it’s stout, it just looks bad ass on there. I got to give them a pro for that.
It’s got smooth airflow and plenty of it. Listen. It actually just sound smooth, doesn’t it? That’s it wide open, just nice.
Overall build quality on this one, really nice. It’s a pro.
Got a nice, deep juice well, another pro.
I like the subtle branding on it, man. There ain’t no loudness on this thing. Good job, Augvape and Twisted Messes.
Love the locking barrel system, pro.
Huge post holes, huge clamps, I’m digging it. It’s a pro.
Last pro is going to be, this thing has very good flavor with really nice cloud production. Let me show you what I’m talking about. I’m rocking it on the Double Barrel V3. I’m at 0.24 ohms, at 120W. Let me show you what I’m talking about here. Clouds for days, baby. It’s just a nice cloudy vape. I get good saturated flavor. That’s what the airflow wide open. The flavor definitely gets better when you cut it down. Let me show you what I’m talking about. Right now, I’m going to cut it down about half way. So one and a half of those three airflows slots are shut right now. Flavor gets a little bit more intense. I definitely like it that way as opposed to wide open. But you airflow hogs are going to love this thing because this thing’s got a shit ton of airflow on it. It really does.
Let’s go over some of the specs on the Augvape Twisted Messes Occula RDA. It is a dual coil RDA. It has a single coil option, 25mm wide, 33mm high. It has a 5mm deep juice well. It has huge post screws and terminal.
