The BMI Nova is what I would consider a high end RDA. In this case, the old adage is very true. You do in fact get exactly what you pay for. I am here to tell you that the BMI Nova is totally legitimate and worth every penny. It really is that good. Yes, it is a very simple design but sometimes in life, simplicity is just better. Sometimes the simpler something is, the better it works and the BMI Nova just works. When you take into consideration the machining, the vape quality, and the simplicity of this RDA, you would be hard pressed to find another more competent high-end RDA. This RDA has earned a spot in my extremely discriminating daily rotation. I have a ton of RDA’s to choose from and I can honestly say that the BMI Nova, so far, has never even been in danger of being replaced. I love and use it all of the time. This RDA has my full DeucesJack approval. If price is not an issue for you, go out and grab one and you will thank me later, for sure.
How Does It Vape?
The BMI Nova was actually my first postless deck in an RDA. I have had many RTA’s with a postless deck but I never had an RDA with a postless deck. The airflow on the Nova is what I would call buttery smooth. For me, the brass drip tip is more for show than for everyday use. It does tend to get extremely hot when chain vaping so I wouldn’t recommend using it in that capacity. This is definitely a bacon lips drip tip. If you are not a chain vaper, then it might serve you well. For me, after about five or six pulls in a row, it just gets ridiculously hot. The thickness of the drip tip will guard against some heat, however, at the same time, it will also retain heat longer because of that same thickness. Once the drip tip heats up, it does take quite some time to cool down. It’s actually kind of a shame to not be able to use such a beautiful drip tip on an everyday basis. I did remedy this situation by using a black Delrin drip tip. I will be honest, I almost feel bad knocking the brass drip tip because of its beauty but I did have to mention it because it does get extremely hot in the scenarios that I described.
Vape quality on the BMI Nova is just next level. It’s an extremely simple atomizer that works extremely well. I have run this atomizer with multiple builds and every way that I can think of. I have used kanthal bills, stainless steel builds, nichrome builds, and have had it in wattage mode and TC mode. No matter what I throw at the Nova, it just performs. Right now, I have it sitting on my Cartel Revenant. I am ohming out at .18 at 100 watts and in power mode. I am vaping some Raspberry Custard in it that I know extremely well. I have to say that this juice has never tasted any better. I get an extremely intense flavor from this RDA that I just don’t get from others. Oh yeah, and let’s not forget about the clouds. This thing will pump out plumes of clouds for days. It will actually make a mosquito fogger jealous if you really crank It up. All in all, an extremely satisfying, flavorful, cloudy vape.
First Impression Out of the Box
Wait a minute, what have we here? This is one beautiful shiny piece of vape gear. It looks like a shiny diamond sitting in the box that it comes in. When you put the BMI Nova in your hand, you can just feel the quality. Just in the first impression section, I can tell you that this is probably some of the best machinings that I have ever seen on a piece of vape gear. Very impressive!
What’s in the Box
From Top to Bottom
I think I said it all in the first impression section. This RDA is just drop dead gorgeous. We will start off with the all-brass drip tip. This is a Goon Style drip tip that is just perfectly machined and very thick. Of course, because it’s a Goon style drip tip, the o’rings are located inside the top cap. It does fit into the top cap perfectly with no movement or wiggle at all. I’m not sure how this drip tip will stand up to the heat that this atomizer produces but it is one of the most beautiful drip tips I have ever seen.
The top cap is also made out of all brass and it secures to the barrel with one ring. The tolerance on the oring is almost perfect. The top cap is machined so that you can run this RDA in single or dual coil mode. When you do install the top cap, it gives off a really confidence inspiring click.
The sleeve of this RDA like the whole atomizer is also made of brass and it is machined just as well as every other piece on the Nova. It does have two airflow slots that are adjustable when you use the top cap. Tolerance when adjusting the airflow is right on point. It is a very simple yet very effective design.
Out of the box, this RDA was extremely clean. I did not see or feel any machine oil. I could not find any burrs either. This is just an exquisitely machined, clean piece of brass inside and out. I will admit it, when I took this atomizer out of the box, I did have an extremely hard time getting the base off for the first time. It comes out of the box very tight. When you do finally get the base off, I would highly recommend that you juice up the o’rings immediately. Overall though, he quality of this piece is simply exquisite. The only con to having an all-brass atomizer is that brass can tend to get funky looking over time. Some people also do not like the smell and claim they get a bit of a taste off of brass. For me, that has not been the case at all. I do have to mention that though because some people may have a personal aversion to these issues. Personally, it’s really not a big deal and bringing the RDA back to new condition is easily remedied with some simple brass cleaner. Yes, there is some maintenance involved in order to keep this atomizer looking sharp but once that maintenance is done, the results are just nothing short of spectacular.
The deck on the BMI Nova is definitely the main attraction. This is the meat and potatoes of this review. This deck is just drop dead gorgeous. There is just no other way to put it. The BMI Nova sports a 24 mm, gold plated, brass, postless deck. The post holes are absolutely huge and they can accommodate basically any coil you can throw at it. Because of the postless design there is really a lot of room in there to get some very wide coils in place. Your leads are trapped by very high quality Phillips head deck screws. Of course this also has a peek insulator. On the base of the deck you will see two beefy o’rings that secure the sleeve to the deck.
When you slide the sleeve onto the deck, you will receive a very confidence-inspiring click. It is reminiscent of the same click you get when you put the top cap on to the sleeve. So far, tolerance on all of the o’rings has been absolutely perfect. The Nova does have a really deep juice well that I easily get 25 drops into without a problem. This may be one of the best postless decks I have ever used.
Building and Wicking
Postless decks have become very popular lately but they can be a little tricky to build if you have never done it before. Whenever I review a postless deck, I always tell all of my readers to just take your time when you are clipping down your leads. This will ensure that you don’t clip off too much and wind up with a coil height you don’t want or worse, a useless coil. The same rules apply for the BMI Nova. Once you find the correct length for your coil leads,, I suggest that you put that coil on a coil jig. Line up the coil that you have not cut yet with the one that has been cut on the coil jig. Put the cut and uncut leads right next to each other and then cut the lead accordingly. This will ensure that both coils have the same exact height when they are mounted on the deck. Once both coils are installed and adjusted you can get all the hot spots out and wick it up. Wicking is fairly straightforward on the Nova you just lay your cotton on the deck and drip away.
