The bottom line is, if you like C-frame type mods and you always wanted a Therion on or a Finder, you should definitely give the Smoant Charon serious consideration. It will give you the look and feel of those two mods without doing serious damage to your wallet. Not only that but in TC mode, it will give you almost as good as a vape as the chipsets found in those two mods. I know this will upset some of the DNA people out there, but it’s true. Make no mistake about it, this is one capable TC mod. I do believe that the Ant 218 board is an extremely underrated board and it will not be long before plenty of vapors start taking notice of this chipset. Just remember, when you see Smoant mods popping up all over the place, you heard it from DeucesJack first. This mod is definitely DeucesJack approved.
How Does It Vape?
This mod will provide the user with a great vape on a great mod. This is an extremely impressive chipset especially at this price point. If this chipset had some software, an app, or even a few more tweaks, it would give the DNA and Yihi Chip a run for their money. It really does Vape that well in TC but I do feel it is a little on the hot side by about 20 degrees. I am actually using the Smoant Battlestar RTA on it right now with dual SS Aliens ohming out at .14, I have the mod set at 90 watts and 480 degrees. I will say this, it does feel a little over powered because I normally vape in TC at 500 degrees but on this mod, 480 feels more like 500. So to compensate, I just vape a little lower than normal. This mod and tank combination will give you one great Vape. I get awesome flavorful clouds and best of all, the Charon looks great doing it without spending a ton of money. What more can a vaper really ask for?
First Impression Out of the Box
All I can say is I’ve been waiting on this one. I’ve been seeing pictures of this mod pop up all over Smoant’s website and I can’t wait to get my hands on this mod. It looks to be of real solid construction. Take it out of the box and it feels really good in the hand. I’m not even going to waste any time on this. I’m just going to pop some batteries in and start vaping.
What’s in the Box
- One Smoant Charon 218W TC Box Mod
- Micro USB Charging Cable
- User Manuals
- Not much here at all so let’s dive down and get into this mod.
From Top to Bottom
So far, this is my second Smoant mod and I have to say they have a really nice 510 on all the mods I have received from them. The threading is really smooth and the platform of the 510 has a unique design on it. The 510 pin itself is springy yet firm and every one of my atomizers sits nice and flush on this mod. It will hold any atomizer under 25mm without any overhang.
This mod looks eerily similar to a Lost Vape Therion. In fact, you could call this a Therion on a budget. Don’t let that fool you into believing this is a cheap mod though, because I can tell you right now the vape quality is there.
The battery cover is very similar to the Therion and has a leather like covering. Smoant claims that it is real leather and it may be but it is definitely a sticker. The door itself has strong magnets and fits on the mod very well. There is no wiggle or rattle to the door at all. There is some venting present on the top and bottom of the door. All in all, the door does look great even though I wish the leather was a little higher quality. The trim on the battery door is metallic and the same color as the rest of the mod.
The battery tray for the Charon is clean and clearly marked for battery orientation. The contacts look to be gold-plated, the two on the top are stationary and the two on the bottom are spring loaded. They do have a good firm spring to them and do a very respectable job of keeping your batteries firmly in place. There is a battery ribbon in the sled to make taking out your batteries an easy job.
The whole body of the mod is a typical C-frame mod. The body has lots of venting along the sides. The venting cutouts seem to have some type of screening behind them and they are rectangular in shape. I absolutely love the firing button on this mod. It is huge, and easy to find with a nice clicky responsive feel to it. The plus minus buttons are done just as well as the firing button. They have a squarish type, almost diamond-like shape to them and a very similar feel to the firing button. The update charge or is located directly below the plus minus buttons. The Charon is firmware updatable.
The screen on this mod looks like the same screen that Smoant uses on its Battlestar mod. The difference is the screen on the Charon looks to be a lot brighter. It does have the same font and information as the Battlestar, it just looks like it is considerably brighter. Of course, all of the information of vaper needs to know is available on the screen. That would include mode, battery life, wattage, resistance, and temperature. The only branding on the mod is on the bottom where it says Smoant.
The Look, Feel, and General Aesthetics of the Mod
This is one good looking mod that does not break the bank. Like I said before, it has the same look and feel as the Therion or Finder DNA mods. The only difference being is the price of admission is not nearly as much as it is for a DNA. While the battery door sticker could have probably been done a little better, it is not a deal-breaker in any way. Overall, this is a really well-built, solid-looking, budget type of mod. In many ways, Smoant outdid themselves on this one and made an elegant, classy looking mod on the cheap.
The Charon uses Smoants proprietary chipset called the Ant 218. It was designed by Smoant and it is upgradeable. Smoant takes great pride in the fact that this chipset will fire with almost no delay. It has the same temperature control suite as the Battlestar and just like the Battlestar, the Charon does a more than respectable job in TC mode. The temperature control suite includes SS, Ni, Ti, Nichrome, as well as a TCR function. There is also a variable wattage and variable TC curve feature that Smoant should be turning on with an update but they are not available as of this writing. Even though they are already in the menu system. Basically, vaping on the Charon is extremely similar to the vape on the Battlestar just in a different form factor.
