I would love to see a Detonator squonker. Oh my god! That would be the best! Bang this thing out a little bit to include a squonk bottle and just do it, Squid Industries. I would love to see that or I would love to see a double-barrel squonker but definitely man, a squonker in Detonator form would be a hit. Trust me when I tell you.
First Impression Out of the Box
DeucesJack: What’s up, everyone! DeucesJack at vaping insider.com. I got a new one for you today. I got the Squid Industries Detonator. Takes 20×700 batteries. That means it’ll do with 21700 or a 20700. Also takes in 18650 with an adapter. Fires down to 0.1 ohms, 28 millimeters on top with no overhang. Let’s cut down low. Let me show you everything up close and personal. We’ll come back on top, we’re going to talk about it a bit, I’ll see you down low.
What’s in the Box
- 1 Detonator 120W Box Mod
- 1 MicroUSB Cable
- 1 Atomizer Spacer
- 1 Instructional Manual
Alright, everyone! Welcome to the down low portion of this video. Today, we’re going to be going over the Squid Industries Detonator. Check that out, man. Been waiting on this one for a while. Nothing going on on the sides of the box. On the back of the box is a cool story about one of the founders of Squid Industries, Eric. Definitely pause it here and take a minute to read it.
Let’s open this up and see what we got. There is your detonator mod. We’re going to take that out. Put that on deck for now. Let’s pull the rubber insert out. Let’s pull the cardboard insert out. Inside the box, we have a micro USB charge update cable. This is firmware upgradeable. We have some silica gel, we have a QC certificate, file that to the side, and we also have a Detonator instruction manual. Let’s put all this crap to the side.
From Top to Bottom
Let’s get to the meat and potatoes. This is your Detonator mod. Check it out, some Detonator branding over there. Right there is your screen, plus, minus, button and an on/off switch. Check that out. That’s kind of cool. I don’t know why more mod manufacturers don’t do that. I really like that. Nice paint job. On the top of the mod, we have a stainless steel plate, stainless steel threading and a spring-loaded 510 which I would call a medium throw with a tight spring to it. See that 510? See? There’s a little bit of a recession right here but it’s not a problem. I haven’t had any of my atomizers gap on it. In fact, you’ll notice, this is the Vandy Vape triple and you can see that it fits on there with maybe the slightest bit of overhang on the lip but I think it still looks good. A little bit of overhang over there, not much. So let’s say 25s with no overhang but 28 don’t look bad. When you’re looking at it from the top. The reason the 28s don’t look bad is because you got this like raised platform here so I don’t think they look terrible but I wouldn’t say they do 28 without any overhang. I’d say 26 is probably the max you can go.
The other thing I wanted to show you is there’s this little ledge right here. That’s kind of cool. Kind of different. Check out this fire button, though. Look at that fire button. It’s got like a tab and then you push and you fire. I’m not sure I like that travel right now. I’m not firing it and you can see, it’s got a bit of travel. Not too sure how I feel about that. It does take some getting used to. This is the travel, then you push. It does feel like it’s on there solid, though. It doesn’t move around, it doesn’t go anywhere. I just don’t know what the longevity of that type of switch is going to be. I guess only time will tell. There is your micro USB port for charging and updates. On the bottom of the mod, you can see, we have some designed by Squid Industries marking over there. 120W maximum is maximum wattage this mod will do.
Here is your battery door, you slide out and then push up. Inside the battery door, you can see we have a gold-plated button style contact with a battery indicator marking here. I really wish that was done in a different color. They’re definitely going to get a con for that. Down the battery tube, there is no battery markings so this is the only battery marking on the mod. The one right there at a plus symbol.
On the bottom of the tube, we have a spring-loaded, gold-plated contact. Batteries go in positive side facing the door. This is a 21700 cell and it fits in there perfectly. So far, all my cells have fit in there perfectly. The 21000 variety, even my Sigelei cell which is the biggest one that I own. Once you put your battery in, the screen does turn on. You can turn the screen off like this with the on/off button. In order to turn the mod on, you hit the on/off button again so Squid Industries and it boots up pretty fast. Screen is super bright. You can see it in all lighting conditions including direct sunlight outdoors.
Here is your wattage, there is your battery meter, there is your battery in percentage, your resistance, your voltage preheat and material that you’re in. Menu system on this mod is pretty easy. Click the button three times. Now you can see that little triangle went to the memory function setting. If I hit it, I can scroll between M1, M2, M3, M4. So there’s 4 memory slots, that’s kind of cool.
1 2 3, there’s the triangle again. Now I can scroll down to resistance and I can set my resistance. 1 2 3, there’s the triangle again. Now I can scroll down to my preheat. You’ll see, I have a choice between normal, soft, hard and user. User is just a curve mode. Hit the fire button 3 times again and you’ll see the triangle came back up. Now I can scroll down and see what material I want to use. You have a choice between kanthal, stainless steel 316, nickel 200, Ti and manual TCR. If you put it in stainless steel 316, your temperature is now here. Everything else is the same except now where your vaults were. You have wattage over here.
If you want to change your wattage, you hit the menu button three times. Scroll down to wattage and now you can change your wattage and it goes all the way up to 120W in temperature control mode. Let’s put it back into wattage. Now you’ll notice, when I scroll, it scrolls in half watt increments. That’s pretty awesome, I like that. Scrolls pretty fast all the way up to 120W. It does round-robin so that’s a nice feature. Overall, I think they did a great job laying out that screen. It’s beautiful, it’s vivid and it’s bright and you can see it’s very functional. You can see it in every type of lighting condition. Definitely diggin that. Hit the fire button 4 times. 1 2 3 4, now you see I’m in the LED menu. Here is where I can pick my color or turn it on and off. Keep it on. I can choose between red, blue, green and white or I have the other choice of turning it off. I normally keep it on green or blue. I kind of like that.
1 2 3 4, now we can go into the breathe menu. Hit the fire button to confirm. You can turn that on or off. If you turn it on, you can have it breathe for 10 minutes, 30 minutes or 60 minutes. I have no idea why you would want to do that. I guess, if you’re going to sit at your kitchen table like a Mook and watch this thing breathe different colors, if that’s your jam, then go right ahead but otherwise, I just don’t understand why. Here it is breathing. You just saw a red, that’s yellow, green and there is blue, purple, there’s the white. One thing I will say about these lights is you can really only see them yourself as the vaper. You really can’t see them if you’re not vaping the mod so that’s kind of cool. I like that. I think that’s LEDs done right.
That’s it, folks. That’s really all I got for you on the Detonator up close. You can see, I got the new Digi Flavor Creed on top. I’ve been rocking it on here for quite some time now. One of my favorite atomizers on this mod. I think it looks fantastic.
Let’s cut back on top. Let’s vape on it, we’re going to talk about it, cons, pros and then we’re out of here. See you back on top.
Alright, everyone! We’re back on top with the Squid Industries Detonator. You saw it down low, man, this thing’s got full TC functionality including a manual TCR setting. Preheat that includes normal, soft and hard, it also has three memory slots. I love the unique fire button on this thing, that little tab like thing going on there. Definitely digging that. It’s different. Measures in at 91 x 38 x 27 millimeters. Love, love, love the on-off switch. I wish more manufacturers would do it. It comes in gunmetal, black and stainless steel. I’m sporting the black one.
Let’s get into the cons and the pros.
First con is going to be, I’m not sure how well that flappy button is going to hold up. I don’t know if that’s going to bend out in time and get off kilter. Not sure about it. It seems like it’s done in a quality way but it does kind of bother me a little bit so I’m going to have to list that as a con even though I love it.
I would have liked to have seen clear up battery indicator markings. Squid, you guys know better than that. You got to do your battery indicator markings in white or some other color that differentiates them, okay? So I’m giving you a con on that.
Other con is going to be, I’m not crazy about that whole breathe thing that I showed you on the lights. Like, what do I want my mod on with lights when I’m not using it? I don’t like lights even when I’m using it but it doesn’t make sense to have them on when I’m not using it so I’m going to give them a con for that. It is a pro you can turn it off but I just think it’s kind of silly.
The other con is going to be Squid, no 18650 adapter? Come on, bro. You guys gotta put in 18650 adapter in there. There are some people that don’t want to go to the extra expense of 20x700s and they have a ton of 18650s. Put an adapter in there for those people.
Let’s get on to the pros.
First pro is I love the paint on this. The paint on this thing is solid. It’s been holding up well. You guys know I beat up my mods and this thing still looks good.
Awesome form factor. Love the way it feels in the hand. We’ll give them a pro for that.
Firmware upgradeable, pro.
Solid battery door, that’s a pro.
LED is subtle and customizable, I’ll give them a pro for that.
I like the fact that it can actually be turned off. That’s a double pro in my book.
Love the on/off switch. Like I said before, I wish more manufacturers would do it. Great, great job on that, Squid Industries.
Very good TC. Hey man, I’m telling you. For a company that really never had a TC mod, the TC on this thing is legit. Trust me when I tell you. Definitely check it out if you’re a TC vaper.
Nice screen, well laid-out. We’re going to give them a pro for that.
Quality 510 on top, love the 510 on this. It’s giving me no issues. We’re going to give them a pro on that.
Feels very accurate in power and TC mode. I’ll give them a pro for that.
And the last pro is I love the clicky buttons on this thing. The buttons are clicky and tactile feeling. You’ll always get a pro on this channel for that.
We’re going to have links down below as to where you can find the Squid Industries Detonator. This one was sent to me directly from Eric from Squid Industries. Gotta give a shout out to my boy, Anthony Vapes. He actually picked this up for me at ECC in California and sent it to me. Shout out to you Anthony.
We’re also going to have a link down below to the juice that we were using. We were using Rare Razzberry. It’s like a blue raspberry candy. If you’re into blue razz juices, definitely check it out. It’s a good one.
