I gotta say, man, I really like this RDA. It’s a nice little flavor RDA. Would have liked to have seen the airflow range knocked down a little bit but it’s fine, you can adjust it. If you put that airflow at the halfway mark, you’re going to get really good flavor. Overall it’s a great little dripper.
What’s up, Insiders? Today, we’re going to be going over the Thunderhead Creations Tauren Solo. You guys know I love my single coil RDAs. Big question is, is this a top single coil RDA? Make sure you watch the whole review, find out exactly what I think. Before we get into the video, make sure you check out our new merch site. You can get my tagline on a shirt or a hoodie.
If dual coil rdas are more of your thing, check out the recent review I did of the Kaees Alexander rda and see why it’s Deucesjack Approved.
What’s In The Box
Also included in the packaging is a flathead screwdriver, you get an owner’s manual, you do get this little hex key, squonking pin, some spare o-rings, quality certificate and some spare deck screws. So that’s kind of neat. There’s your user manual right there.
- 1 x THC Tauren Solo RDA(with regular 510 pin)
- 1 x 510 BF pin
- 1 x Hexagon wrench
- 1 x Accessories bag
From Top To Bottom
Check out that packaging, man. That packaging is a little different, I’m digging that. Got this little really nice metal cylinder inside a velvety type bag, I like that. There’s your content right there. This also doubles as a build stand, I’m going to show you that in a minute.
Let’s open up the secondary packaging and let me show you what I’m talking about. You unscrew it, just like that and look at that, man. Nice metal piece here. I like that. Good job on that. And here is your atomizer, it’s screwed on to the base so when you’re done with it, you could use this part as a display stand or just as a build stand. Check that out, man.
Now this is the brass and black one. Like that logo there, man. They did a nice job with that, it’s not too gaudy, I’m kind of diggin that, I really am. I’m loving the finish on this. The finish it’s like some type of crinkle coat. Really, really nice job, definitely unique, I like that a lot.
On the bottom, you can see I have the normal 510 installed, we’re going to swap that out. I do have a serial number right there and you can see, it’s from Thunderhead Creations. We do have a gold plated traditional 510, insulator ring, stainless steel threading right there. We’re going to swap this out for the squonking pin in a minute.
Put this back on our handy stand. Here is your drip tip, 810 goon style drip tip, all Ultem with that black ring around it and some Thunderhead Creations branding over there. I don’t mind it. I kind of like the way the black matches and breaks up the Ultem, nice job on that. All your other 510 should fit in there nice and snug, no issues.
Now, you can see, we have 1 airflow, 2 air flows on both sides, Now the neat thing about this is it’s got stoppers on both ends. It stops there and it stops there. So this is how you cut your airflow down. And of course, whatever you do on one side, happens on the other side. O-ring
tolerance on this is absolutely gorgeous, man. What a nice job.
Now, check this out. All brass inside. They must have put some type of coating on it because it doesn’t have that brass smell to it. This part, it’s a one-piece top cap, this part over here does not come out.
Check this deck out, man. This is a little different. You got these slanted post holes over here, they look like a pretty decent size, especially considering this is a single coil atomizer. You have your airflow over here and then you got this super deep juice well over here and here. Look at the side of it, that’s a deep juice well, man. I kind of like that.
Now, the way they design this deck reminds me of the Cthulhu Mjolnir and that Blitz Hermetic because what’s happening here is this is your airflow but it’s also a drain. So if you drip down the middle, the juice is going to flow into the juice well and over your coil. But if you’ll notice right there, the airflow is kind of slanted downward so it’s got a nice deep juice well and it’s probably going to be tough to over squonk on. And the same things going on on the other side, you can see that slant, how it slants downward? So this is probably going to be a tough deck to over squonk on.
I do like the little cutouts they put here for your wicking channels, nice job on that. The thing looks like it’s machined beautifully, it really does. They did a nice job on it, man. It looks real, real different. And I do like that little bit of airflow they put on top there, kind of wrapping around the top, that’s kind of neat as well, man. Just a really, really nice job on this deck. It looks interesting.
So as you can see, the hex screws right here, they’re 1.5mm. I opened them up so you could see how big the post holes actually are. So the first thing you want to do is you want to take your coil, you want to get a coil measuring tool and you want to cut it at around 4.5, right there. So you put it in there take your flush clippers, get them in there as close as you can, cut those leads down. That’s what your coil is going to look like.
Now, you want to take it and you want to bend one side a little outward, not much, just a little bit, just like that. See that? Now what we’re going to do is we’re going to take the long side, we’re going to put that in, first. And now, we’re going to finagle that short side in there, just like that. We’re going to hold everything in place, we’re going to take our driver and we’re going to lock down that short side right there, just like that. Now, we’re going to flip everything around, we’re going to make sure that long side is in there and we’re going to give it a nice tightening as well.
Now that it’s all in there like that, you can put your coiling rod in there and you see these spaces right here? They’re going to let you know where you’re at as far as the center goes. We can push it and pull it a little bit, like that, make sure it’s nice and even. And your coil should look something like that. Now, notice, it might be riding a little on the high side, maybe we’ll take it and we’ll push it down a little bit so it looks something like that. Notice, we’re getting the air flow from here and we’re getting the air flow from the bottom. That’s how you want it. just like so. Now the other thing I wanted to do before I put this on a mod is I want to take out the traditional pin and I want to add the squonking pin. You just pull it out with your flat head just like so and then you add your squonking pin and just screw it in just like so.
And there we go, now we’re ready to pulse that coil. Right now, we’re ohming out at 0.38, that’s probably going to change a little bit. Lets pulse this thing, make sure we have no hot spots. See? We got some hot spots. Getting better. Glowing evenly from the inside out, that’s exactly how we want it. Now we’re going to take our wicking material, we’re going to give it a pinch at one end make it nice and pointy.
Now we’re going to take our wicking material, we’re going to give it a pinch at one end make it nice and pointy. And now, we’re just going to feed that cotton through there, nice and gently, just like that. Now, what we want to do is we want to make sure our wicks hit the bottom of that juice well. So you want to cut your wicks right by that last o-ring, right down there, right by the base. Same thing on the other side, run that scissor along the base and just give it a snip. Now, what we want to do is we want to take our wicks and we just want to gently, ever so gently, tuck them right in there, nice and neat, just like that. Flip the atomizer around and do the same thing. Just tuck it in there nice and gently, try not to disturb the wicking action of the cotton. And there we go, we’re all built and wicked.
We’re going to slap this thing on one of my all-time favorite squonker, this is my Dot Mod squonker. We’ll give it a couple of squonks but it’s really not going to get it started. What we’re going to use to get it started is That1Vape’s French Vanilla Custard, it’s already in the squonk bottle. So all you want to do is take your That1Vape, take your French Vanilla Custard and just hit that coil real nice, just like that. Give it a little test fire. We’ve got vape . Put a little bit
more juice on it and now, we’re ready for our top cap. Make sure it locks into place. There it is, it’s all locked up and now we’re all ready to vape. Kind of like the way the gold matches the gold on there.
First pro is going to be that built-in stand, I like that, man. That’s an awesome job. I wish all the
companies would do that. It’s a nice chunk of metal, it looks good when you put the atomizer on there, nice job, Thunderhead Creations.
The looks! The looks, man! It’s a good looking RDA, there’s no doubt about that.
Build quality on this one actually really nice, gotta give them props, it’s a pro.
Airflow on this one. For those of you that like gobs and gobs of airflow, if you like a ton of airflow on a single coil deck, this one’s going to be right up your alley. Most single coil vapers I don’t think are into that type of airflow but if that’s you, definitely check this out. It does have a nice airflow range and you can cut it down to a more comfortable level.
This one’s a little tough to over squonk on because it’s got that drain system that I showed you down low, I like that. You can over squonk on it if you put a ton of juice through it but it’s kind of on the tough side.
Really nice flavor and clouds on this one. I got to say, I’ve been enjoying it, I’ve been running it on my Dot Squonk Mod, the regulated one, and it’s been fantastic. Let me show you what I’m working with. I got a 0.27 build in here, it’s 60W. Check it out. Not bad, man. Really nice flavor, really nice clouds. That was with the airflow half-open right. If you bang that airflow all the way open, let me give it a quick squonk so I know I got some juice in there, here we go. The flavor is not as good, I like it better with the airflow halfway shut down.
This one’s definitely one of the better single coil RDAs on the market right now.
Price point on this one at under $30, I think it’s more than fair for the quality that you get. It’s a pro.
And that’s it, Insiders! Those are my pros and cons.
Alright, Insiders! Let’s go over those cons and pros.
First con is going to be no coil cutting tool. On this deck, it’s a con because this decks a little bit of a pain in the neck to build on. However, if you do have a coil cutting tool, I recommend that you use the 4-4.5mm spot.
Airflow on this thing, for a single boiler, it’s got a ton of airflow, It’s got gobs of airflow. Almost too much for a single coiler and it’s a little bit on the loud side. Let me show you what I’m talking about. Hear that, man? Sounds like a freaking wind tunnel in there. Almost sounds like it wants to whistle. If I cut it down halfway, there we go, that’s about halfway. It doesn’t change much but you’ll definitely notice a difference in flavor. If you run it half way open, the flavor gets exponentially better.
And the last con is going to be the wicking on this one can be a little bit of a tricky situation because you kind of got to push your wicks to one side. I didn’t show it down low but the way they have the splitter on the squonking, especially if your squonking, you definitely want to push your wicks to one side because you don’t want to block that splitter for the juice when you’re squonking juice into it in squonk mode. So just keep that in mind. It’s a little bit of a con, it’s not a big deal.
But that’s it on the cons, nothing really too major, mostly nitpicky stuff. Let’s get into the pros.
Let’s go over some of the specs on the Thunderhead Creations Tauren Solo. It measures in at 24mm x 30mm. It’s made out of 304 stainless steel. It has a 2ml juice well. It is 810 drip tip compatible. It is a single coil deck with honeycomb airflow, it actually has 31 holes.
