First Impression Out Of The Box:

If you purchase Smoant stuff before, then you know what to expect. This sub ohm tank comes in a black box with a colorful yellow sleeve. Open the box up and in a foam insert, you will see your Battlestar Sub Ohm Tank on the right, a spare glass to the left of it, and a spare parts pack. Everything is nicely packaged and it arrived in good order.

The tank does look a lot like a Smok Baby Beast sort of tank. It’s a bottom airflow tank and it takes coils that are compatible with the Smok Baby Beast. Like most Smoant products, it looks to be of high quality and well made. Let’s load one of the coils up with some juice and see how it actually vapes.

What’s In The box:

  • 1 x Battlestar Sub ohm Tank
  • 1 x Spare glass tube
  • 1 x 0.4ohm Ni80 OCC
  • 1 x 0.15ohm Ni80 OCC
  • 4 x Spare silicone o’rings
  • 1 x User manual

Smoant Battlestar Sub Ohm Tank Review

From Top To Bottom:

The tank comes with a 510 drip tip that is black. It looks like a wide bore chuff cap style sort of drip tip but in reality, it is not. The inside actually tapers down quite a lot into the 510 opening. It is a very comfortable drip tip and it does stay in place very nicely. It has two o’rings on the bottom of it that secure it to the drip tip opening. I’m not sure why they did not go with a Goon style DT, there is definitely enough airflow to accommodate one.

The top cap on the tank is a slider style top cap. Around the outside of the fill port cap, there is some lettering that says push. This is the side of the top cap that you push forward. Once you push it forward, you will see one kidney bean shaped opening. The opening will accommodate most juice bottles on the market today. The sliding action on the top cap is very nice and it does seem to stay in place. There is no locking mechanism on the slider and I would have liked to have seen some sort of mechanism to secure it in place. On the exterior of the top cap, there is a slightly raised platform but it is quite wide so it really doesn’t affect the look of other drip tips you might want to run on it.

The fill port cap tapers down into a wide bore chimney. The top of your coil screws into this chimney. There is an o’ring on the chimney and the threading on the chimney is rather smooth. The chimney is short so the flavor does not have a long way to travel from the coil to your mouth. There is also an o’ring around the interior of the fill port top cap that secures your glass section in place. This tank will hold 4 mls of juice.

The base of the tank has some smooth threading and this is where you install the included coil. This is a bottom airflow tank and it does have 2 cyclops style airflow slots on the base. They are fully adjustable with stoppers on both ends. It can be quite an airy tank and it does remind me very much of the Smok Baby Beast as far as the airflow goes. In between the two airflow slots, there is what looks like line you would see on a cardiogram. It is engraved into the base of the tank. On the bottom of the base, there is some Battlestar and Smoant branding. The 510 looks to be gold plated and it has an insulator ring around it. The threading around the 510 pin is stainless steel and smooth. I have had no issues with this atomizer sitting flush on any of my mods. The base measures in at 24.5 mm.

The Coils:

  • .4 ohm Ni80 OCC
  • .15 ohm Ni80 OCC

When I first saw these coils, I was a little surprised to see that they are made out of an Ni80. I haven’t seen any Baby Beast compatible coils that are made with this material. I was very interested in trying them because I know that Ni80 normally gives you some more heat and a quicker ramp up time.

Smoant Battlestar Sub Ohm Tank Review

The first coil I tried was the .4 ohm coil. It has a rating of 40 – 60 watts. I broke it in at 40 watts for about 10 or 12 pulls. After that, I slowly raised it up, till I got to the 60-watt point. Throughout the whole range of the coil, I got pretty good flavor. At 40 watts, it was a flavorful vape and the clouds weren’t bad at all. Up at 50 watts, the flavor definitely got a little better and so did the clouds. At 60 watts is where I think this coil really shines. I normally don’t like running coils at their maximum, so most of the time, I vape this coil at around 58 watts. I think at that wattage, I get the best flavor and the best cloud production.

Next, I tried the .15 coil. This coil is rated between 35 – 55 watts. As always, I primed the coil and started off near the bottom of the wattage range. At 35 watts, the clouds were kind of anemic and so was the flavor. I cranked it up to 45 watts and you could definitely see a big difference in vapor production and flavor. I like running this coil right around 52 watts. I find that I get a really nice flavor and a vape that I get is on the saturated side. It’s a really good coil at that wattage. Now, some people may have a nickel allergy and if you do, this may not be the coil system for you.

I have to admit, both coils really did impress me. Both of them have really nice flavor and really good cloud production. They also both ramp up very quickly. As soon as you hit that fire button, these coils are producing vapor. This is a very nice coil system that Smoant came up with and I really do hope they support it in the future and develop more coils for this family. What I would really like to see is someone come up with a Baby Beast coil that I can actually run in TC mode.

How Does It Vape?

The tank vapes really well, but what do you expect, it takes Smok Baby Beast coils. A lot of companies have jumped on the Smok Baby Beast bandwagon and to be honest, you really can’t blame them. It’s a very solid mid range tank. That’s also another plus, the fact that there are a ton of coils that are compatible with this tank. So, if you don’t like these coils or you don’t like the coils that Smok makes, you have a bunch of other choices to choose from.

One thing I really want to give Smoant credit for is the coil system that they developed for this tank. Both coils use Ni80 as their coil material. I don’t know any other company that makes Baby Beast coils with that material in it. I think that’s a pro, and I think that’s something different that distinguishes them from all of the other companies that are making Baby Beast like tanks.

What Would Have Made It Better:

  • Goon Style Drip Tip With A 510 Adapter

The Battlestar has enough airflow for you to go with a Goon style drip tip and throw in a 510 drip tip adapter for good measure. I would have really liked to have seen Smoant do that. I like the drip tip that comes with it and it is very comfortable but the airflow can definitely support a wider bore DT. This is a very picky con though and to be honest, there really isn’t much wrong with this tank. It’s a really good tank that vapes really well.

Conclusion:

This is a really nice tank that is built well and it vapes just like a Smok Baby Beast tank. That’s a good thing, because I have always liked the way those tanks have vaped. If you’re looking for something that is probably built a little better but still takes the same coil system, then this tank might be just for you. Maybe you’re not too thrilled with the coil section that Smok has been providing you and you want to try something a little different with a different material? If that’s the case, then you should definitely check out the Battlestar sub ohm tank. It’s really well built and it performs beautifully. If that’s the type of tank that you’re in the market for, this one is DeucesJack approved. Go check it out.
