First Impression Out Of The Box:

As soon as I opened up the box on this mod, I knew it was a looker. I got sent the brown leather one with the wood inlay and I have to say that it is absolutely gorgeous. I think looks-wise, this is one of the best looking mods of 2017. In fact, when my 9-year-old son saw it, he referred to it as the Cowboy mod. When I questioned him further, he said it looks like a mod that a Cowboy would carry. He is absolutely right, it has an old school, leather-look with some beautiful wood accents.

The box slides out of a cardboard sleeve and when you open the top part of the box, you will see your mod sitting on the left side with a USB cable on the right side. The USB cable is nothing special and it doesn’t look to be of particular high quality. The rest of the contents of the box consists of a warranty card and a user manual.

From Top To Bottom:

On the top of the mod, we have a stainless steel platform that houses the 510. The 510 is spring-loaded and gold-plated. It has a pretty good spring to it and a decent throw. The threading around the 510 is very smooth and so far, all of my atomizers have sat flush. This mod will accept a 25mm atomizer with no overhang.

Across from the 510 connection but sloped downward is where you will find the fire button. The fire button sits on an angled platform and it is circular in shape. It has a stainless steel ring around it and the fire button seems to be made out of stainless steel as well. The fire button is in an absolutely fantastic location for people that like to thumb fire. It is very comfortable to use and it has a nice feel to it. It is slightly on the mushy side and not as tactile as I like my fire buttons to be, but nonetheless it is still very comfortable to use because of its awesome location.

With the screen facing you on the left and right sides of the mod, you have a beautiful saddle brown leather wrapper. It looks absolutely gorgeous and it is definitely one of the best leather jobs I have seen on a mod to date. Right below the fire button, on either side of the mod, there is a triangular shape on both sides that houses a brown wood inlay. The brown wood matches perfectly with the brown leather and I think they just look fabulous together. You would think by the shape of this mod that it is a C-frame mod but it is not. The batteries are loaded from the bottom of the mod.

The Ark takes two 18650 batteries. The battery door is a slide out type that comes completely off the mod. On the exterior of the battery door, there is some Think Vape and Exus branding. There is also some raised knurling that helps you get a grip on the door in order to open it. On the interior of the battery door, there are two, gold-plated, button-style contacts. There is some battery indication markings but after time, they tend to get hard to see. I wish they would have made them a little clearer or in a different color.

The battery tubes are lined with some sort of plastic, probably Delrin. The battery contacts at the end of the tubes are clearly marked and they are gold plated as well as spring loaded. So far, all my batteries have fit into the tubes with no issues at all. I have experienced no battery door or battery rattle at all. I actually like the way they did the battery door because it slides into a slot at the bottom of the battery tray. This ensures that the battery door stays on tight. There are also two little notches at the ends of the battery door that click into place on the mod. Overall, a very nicely done battery door. One thing that is missing from the battery door is some venting. I do not see any vent holes at all.

On the front of the mod, we have the screen. It is a .91 inch OLED screen. On it, you will be able to see your resistance, battery life, voltage, mode, wattage, and temperature. It is laid out like a typical DNA screen but this is not a DNA chip in this mod. I know, Think Vape normally does go with the DNA boards but in this mod, they decided not to. Kind of a shame, because this would have been one of my mods of the year if it did have a DNA chipset in it.

Right below the screen, we have the plus and minus buttons. They are square in shape and they have clear indicator markings on them. Of course, the plus button is on top and the minus button is on the bottom. They do have a nice clicky tactile feel to them. In fact, they actually feel better than the fire button. Right below the plus and minus buttons, there is a charge port. I do not know if this mod is firmware upgradable or the rate that it charges at because I could not find the specs for it. I went to Think Vapes website and it has been down for months, so I don’t know what their issue is. That also brings into question what kind of support this or any mod from Think Vape will have. If I do find that information in the near future, I will update this review.

The Look, Feel, and General Aesthetics Of The Mod:

The Cowboy mod, I love the look of this mod and it does look like a mod that a Cowboy would carry. I think the leather on it is beautifully done and I think the wood accents on it are absolutely gorgeous. The placement of the fire button is fantastic and it is extremely comfortable to hold and use. Like I said before, I think it’s one of the better looking mods of 2017.

The Board:

Think Vape used their ST 200 chip in this mod. I think that was a huge mistake because to be honest, this chipset is absolutely horrible. It only vapes well in power mode. Every other function on the chip is just garbage. It doesn’t vape well in TCR mode or any of the TC modes. It says it has a full temperature control suite but to be honest, that is just a straight up lie. This thing does not do temperature control. Think Vape, if you’re reading this review, you should really go back to using DNA chipset in your mod because this is just a total bomb as far as the chipset goes. It’s one and only redeeming quality is that it does vape well in power mode. If they re released this with a DNA board, I’d be all over it.

The Menu System:

The Ark has a very simple menu system but to be honest with you, who really cares? It only vapes well in power mode so there really is no reason for you to even go into the menu system. The only thing you’re going to do on this mod is adjust your wattage up and down.

If you do feel inclined to venture into the menu system and test out the TC yourself, all you have to do is click the fire button 3 times. This will make the power part of the screen flash and while it is flashing, you use the plus or minus button to scroll through the different options and materials. Once you find an option that you want, you hit the fire button to confirm and you are in TC mode.

How Does It Vape?

As we said before in the other section, this is a power mode only mod. I think it vapes really well in power mode and I have definitely been enjoying using the Ark. I have vaped it anywhere from 40 watts all the way up to 175 watts and it seems to be accurate in power mode. I’m not too sure if it does the full 200 watts, to be honest I highly doubt it. I did vape it next to my DNA device and it seems to max out at around 170 to 175 watts. When I use the same tank on a DNA mod at 200 watts, it doesn’t feel like the same type of vape. It is much weaker and not as hot as the vape I get from a DNA mod at the same wattage.

I really have no idea what Think Vape was thinking. They had a winning combination and they were making beautiful mods with a great chipset. On this one, they decided to go out on their own and use their own chipset. That’s fine, if you’re going to do that but at least test the chipset and make sure it actually does TC. To go from a DNA chipset to this garbage chipset is just ridiculous. I almost feel like they made their bones with the DNA chipset and now, they are looking to dupe everybody with this one. I just don’t understand how a company can bring a chipset like this to market, especially after they worked hard on developing a reputation of making quality mods. It just makes no sense. Bad move, Think Vape! You really need to check your stuff and right this ship because your company is capable of a lot more than what it put out with this mod.

What Would Make It better:

  • A Real Chipset

Chipset on this one is a total failure. It does not do temperature control and it doesn’t even give you a little bit of vapor when you put it in TC mode. It’s a total fail as far as I’m concerned and to be honest, Think Vape should be ashamed for putting a board like this in one of their mods. I mean really? Voopoo can make an affordable chipset that does TC. Smoant can also make an affordable chipset that does TC. I guess Think Vape can not.

Conclusion:

I can’t stand doing reviews like this. This mod checks off a lot of the boxes and in a lot of ways, it’s an absolutely awesome mod. However, it’s a total failure when it comes to the chipset and it’s very hard for me to overlook that. Now, if you’re just a power user, then the TC thing might not be a big deal to you. I for one cannot stand it when companies advertise their mods as doing TC and then when you try them out they are just not competent. That is not even the case with this mod, it just does not do TC. It doesn’t even do bad TC. The TC is just non existent. That is a dealbreaker for me.

I think Think Vape would have been much better off marketing this mod as a power mode only mod because in reality, that’s all it is. In that respect, that’s the only way I can actually recommend this mod. If you’re a power mode only user, then you’ll probably get a lot of enjoyment out of it. If you are into TC or you like running those custom wires and using the TCR function, I would urge you to stay away from the Exus Ark. Be sure to use a Vapor DNA promo code when purchasing this mod.

I have had my Exus Ark for several months now and still love it. Knew it wasn’t for the tc crowd when I bought it. In power mode it’s great. No power lag and good battery life, also the leather is holding up nicely with daily use. Appreciate your honesty and do understand your frustration with Think Vape.
