First Impression Out Of The Box:

When I first opened the box to the Phobia RDA, I was a little surprised to see two barrels. Even more surprising was upon closer inspection, there didn’t seem to be a difference in them when it came to the airflow cutouts. I’m looking forward to trying both and reporting on differences. As soon as I laid eyes on this RDA, I absolutely loved the matte black finish on it. I think it looks sexy and sleek. I can’t wait to throw a build on it and see how it actually performs.

From Top To Bottom:

This is a very interesting RDA because it comes with two very different style drip tips and two separate barrels. The first barrel and drip tip combination is very traditional with an 810 opening on a combination top cap and barrel. The drip tip for this barrel is the short chuff style but it does have some ribbing going around the circumference of it that gives it a little bit of texture. It’s very comfortable and I have enjoyed using it. All of my other 810 drip tips fit nice and snug in this barrel as well. There is some Phobia branding going around the top part of this barrel and right by the drip tip, it says “no more fear no more phobias”. On the bottom of the barrel, there are two airflow cutouts for the bottom airflow and they coincide with two cutouts on the bottom of the base. The interior has a really nice conical design to it. On the body of the barrel, there is a Phobia emblem that looks like a skull with flames coming out of it.

The second barrel included in the packaging does not have any top to it. It’s just a cylinder with air flow holes cut out at the bottom. It takes a chuff cap style drip tip that basically doubles as a top cap. It is basically identical to the first barrel but it is missing the top part. It has all the same cutouts and branding on the side of the barrel.

The base of the Phobia is 24 mm in diameter. So, it will look good on most mods. In fact, I have truly been enjoying this particular RDA on my Squid Industries Double Barrel and my Smoant Ranker mod. I think the RDA just looks phenomenal on both of those mods. There is a thick o’ring that runs along the interior of the base that keeps the barrel in place. The o’ring has some great tolerance to it. On the bottom of the base, there are two, thin, rectangular-shaped air slots that feed the air flow posts on the deck. The airflow on the bottom of the deck is fully adjustable. On the bottom of the atomizer, there is some Phobia branding as well as a serial number. There is also some branding for Alex From VapersMD.

Alex From VapersMD is a very popular Russian YouTube reviewer. He has been doing a lot of work with Vandy Vape lately. He helped design the Berserker MTL Tank as well as the Berserker Mini. This RDA is also a collaboration between him and Vandy Vape. Out of all of his collaborations so far, I think this one is his best by far.

The bottom of the base has a gold plated 510 pin that is fully removable. It can be replaced with an included squonking pin. The 510 pin has an insulator ring around it. The threading on the 510 is stainless steel as well as extremely smooth. Overall, the build quality on this RDA is just stellar. I really like the matte black finish and it has held up nicely in my UC. This is a very well built RDA.

The Deck:

The Phobia deck is a postless deck system. It has 4 terminals with grub screws that are accessed from the sides that make for easy building. The M4 grub screws are gold plated and beefy. They are some of the best post screws I have ever used. Vandy Vape even includes an Allen key that works with the post screws as well as the included squonking pin. When you look at the deck from the top, it almost looks like a bone. The deck has 2 airflow posts that come up and provide the user with side and bottom airflow.

When I first saw this RDA, I wasn’t sure why they made the air flow like this. It almost seems counterintuitive because you would think that the airflow slots on the base would be better, if they were coming out directly under the coils. When you first look at this RDA, it’s hard to believe that they did not locate the outside air flow directly under the black airflow posts. I’m not sure why Vandy Vape did this but it does work and it works well. I just think it would have been better the other way.

The air flow posts almost form a cradle sort of shape that you can place your coil into for superior flavor. Each airflow hole in the posts measures 3mm x 2mm for the center slots and 3 mm x 3 mm for the side slots. The deck has a deep 5 mm juice well. Because of the way the airflow is configured, it is very tough to over squonk or over drip on this RDA. Don’t get me wrong, it can be done but you really need to be extra sloppy and put a ridiculous amount of juice down the middle. This deck can be run in dual or single coil mode.

Building And Wicking:

Building on the Phobia RDA is pretty straightforward. Like most postless deck systems, the hardest part is actually getting the correct length of your leads down. I’ll give you a pro tip, use the included Delrin 810 drip tip and measure your coil up against it. Cut the end of your leads right where the fat part of the drip tip ends. If you do this, you will have a perfect length for your leads every time. The post screws are nice and beefy so you will have no problems securing your leads.

You can fit some pretty big coils in the Phobia but coil placement on this RDA is pretty imperative. You want to make sure that your coil actually sits in the little cradle that is created with the interior airflow slots. You also want to make sure that you get this coil as close to the air flow as possible. This will ensure that you get great flavor off of the Phobia RDA.

Once your coil is properly mounted and you have the right placement down, if you are running contact coils, you will want to pulse your coils gently to get out all of the hot spots. After that, you are ready to wick. Wicking on the Phobia RDA is as easy as can be. Because of the overall shape of the deck, the wicks do fit nicely into the corners of the deck. Simply tuck your wicks in gently and make sure they touch the bottom of the RDA. I like to cut my wicks right around where the post screws end, at the base of the deck. This should give you a perfect length and excellent wicking.

How Does It Vape?

Oh boy, can this RDA Vape. I was actually really surprised at the flavor that I received off of the Phobia RDA. Even more surprising is how the flavor differed with the different barrels that are included. The reason I was so surprised is because when you look at them, there is really not that much of a difference between them. I have found that when I run this RDA with the chuff cap barrel, I get a much more saturated and flavorful vape. With this barrel on the RDA, the flavor is in your face and you definitely get all of the main flavors of whatever juice you are vaping. I think simple flavored juices do much better with this barrel set up. This is also the set up that you want to run if you have a particularly hot build in this RDA. That Delrin chuff cap is going to keep the heat at bay and you’re going to be able to chain vape without burning your lips.

Conversely, when I run it with the Goon barrel, I find that I get a little bit of a dryer vape that is less cloudy but at the same time, I can taste more nuances with the Goon barrel. For some reason, this barrel setup makes a big difference when it comes to complex juices that you are vaping. I definitely get more flavor notes with this barrel than I do with the Goon barrel. I would recommend this barrel for juices with some complexity to them. You definitely want to run this barrel when you use some of your cooler builds because remember, this is an all-metal combination top cap barrel and it does get hot while chain vaping. No matter which barrel you decide to use, you will get banging flavor and great cloud production.

As far as the airflow goes, I think it’s pretty smooth and I would rate it as a restrictive lung hit type of RDA. It’s not an extremely airy RDA but it does have a little noise to it when you do take a pull. I think that’s because of the way they designed the airflow and where it is located on the base of the RDA. I think Vandy Vape would have been much better off if they would have located that exterior air flow right underneath the black posts instead of on the sides of those posts. Had they done that, I think the airflow would be even smoother and the RDA would probably be even more flavorful.

The Phobia RDA has some great flavor and it is a legitimate cloud chucker as well. It is also an extremely competent squonking RDA. I have found with the raised post holes on the interior of the deck that it is very hard to actually over squonk on this RDA. It performs beautifully as a squonker and I would highly recommend it in that mode as well.

What Would Have Made It Better:

  • More Airflow From Another Location

In my opinion, this RDA is just a tad too restrictive. I honestly think that the airflow is set up wrong and it’s getting knocked around as it travels through the bottom of the RDA. I would have much rather seen the air flow located underneath the cradle of the post on the deck. If they would have put the exterior airflow there, I think this would be a much smoother RDA and much less noisy. It’s not crazy noisy but when you do give it a hard pull, it almost sounds like it wants to whistle.

Conclusion:

Even with the slight air flow issue, this is one flavorful RDA. Not only does it have great flavor but this thing can chuck clouds with some of the best RDA’s on the market right now. I absolutely love running this RDA on my Squid Double Barrel. I think it looks like it was just made for it. I have been using this RDA for well over a month and I have put multiple builds in it. So far, everything I throw at it, it handles beautifully. If you’re looking for a good cloud chucking RDA that has awesome flavor, then you don’t need to look any further. Go pick yourself up a Vandy Vape Phobia. Have no fear of this particular Phobia, because it’s DeucesJack approved.
